Are You Cut Out To Becoming a Teacher?  Me Neither

So here's the thing that's been bothering me over the past few weeks.  There are a lot of student teachers who really have the desire to become a teacher because they simply love getting up in front of a group of eager eyed youngsters and spreading knowledge.

That's great, that really is.

But more often than not, the same people are holding themselves back.  And the reason they're holding themselves back is because they are letting their amygdala dictate what it is they achieve in their life.

And it's this that I have a real problem with...

In each and every one of us we have a fight or flight function that has been responbile for helping us survive as a species.  It's the same thing that we used to either run or fight when we were chased by lions back in the old cave days.  Back when we had to cook on an open fire or when we had to hunt for food as opposed to picking it off the supermarket shelf.

The problem is, I can't remember the last time I was chased by a lion.  Can you?

But whilst our environment has changed immensely, our bodies haven't - our internal processes are just hte same as when we were living in caves being chased by crazy creatures.

And that's why teachers today are so scared. They're scared to step out from the crowd, to do something different, to put themselves out there.  They feel a fear and their immediate reaction is to balk at that fear and jump back into the crowd.

Let this be a lesson to you - we're all afraid, we all have fear, we all fail - get over it.

The next time a teacher wannabe comes up to me and tells me about their fear of teaching, I'll slap them around the chops and tell them that the only thing they should be afraid of is fear itself.  ANd with that attitude you will go far, very far!

I have a Texas Teacher Certification Online blog here - if you're looking at becoming a teacher then I think you should take a few moments to check that site out.  It's got all the information you need to become accredited in the fastest time possible.
